FIFTEEN

Dear Carolina,

I can’t begin to explain how I feel about you right now. My feelings evolve each day that I know you. With every moment, I am more drawn to you. My thoughts are consumed by your face, your skin, the sound of your voice.

Carolina, you are beautiful inside and out. I cannot imagine my life without you in it now. You are the missing piece of my puzzle, I am sure of it.

—M.

“Mom, we gotta go!”

Hearing the sound of her son’s voice calling to her from out in the kitchen, Carolina quickly clicked the email closed. “Be right there, Patrick,” she shouted back, though she did not move from her seat. She needed a moment to compose herself.

In the few weeks since they had met up at that seafood restaurant for lunch, Michael had been sending her messages like this every day—letters about how much he missed her, how much he thought about her, how compelled he was to see her again. They hadn’t gotten together again yet—hadn’t been able to find time away from their families—but Carolina knew that it was just a matter of time.

Don’t want to rush anything, she thought absently, her mind drifting to an image of Michael’s broad smile, the gleam in his eyes as he looked at her. But then again…

“Mom!” In the kitchen, her children were ready and waiting on her to drive them to school. She had been letting Patrick play the chauffeur more and more lately, but today she would be done with work early and wanted to pick them all up herself. Figured she would take them shopping, have a little quality time, just the four of them, while David spent another evening at his office.

“Coming!” she called, then stood up from her chair and straightened her suit. Running her fingers through her hair, she looked out the window: another sunny, gorgeous day. She wondered if Michael was out there somewhere on his bike, enjoying the fresh air. Over lunch that last time he’d told her all about his love of the sport, about his early morning rides. The very next day, he’d started texting her pictures of the scenery he saw along the way.

Remembering this, she pulled her cell phone out of her jacket pocket and quickly flipped it open. “Download, download!” she muttered to it as she waited for the new picture message to come in.

“Mom!” Patrick’s calls were getting frantic. She could hear him sighing loudly as the girls bickered with one another—all the usual noise of a busy morning.

“Coming!” she called back again, glancing out into the hallway to make sure that no one was coming. On her phone’s small screen, the picture finally came into view: Michael’s face in front of an expanse of blue sky, snow-capped Mt. Rainier in the distant background. He wore a black helmet and orange-tinted sunglasses; his cheeks were red, and the ends of his hair stuck to his damp neck. He looked tired…but he was smiling like the happiest man on earth.
